Dr. James Powers is a board-certified ophthalmologist and retinal surgeon who has dedicated his career to helping diabetic and senior patients preserve their vision. With nearly three decades of experience, he specializes in the treatment of retinal disease — including diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachments, floaters, and both medical and surgical retinal conditions.
His approach is built around education and partnership. Dr. Powers takes the time to thoroughly explain each patient's condition and treatment options, empowering them to make informed decisions about their eye health. Patients and families consistently describe his warm demeanor, steady hands, and genuine concern for the people in his care.
It was a personal connection to diabetes that inspired his life's work — driving his commitment to helping people with diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration keep their sight and live healthier lives. Since 2003, that mission has been at the heart of Healthy Vision Institute.
Dr. Powers is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Osteopathic Association, and the American Medical Association, among others. He is affiliated with numerous hospitals and surgery centers across the Tampa Bay area.
