Cataract Surgery for Seniors: What to Know

Cataracts are one of the most common parts of aging eyes — and cataract surgery is one of the most common, safest, and most successful procedures in all of medicine. Here's what to expect.

What a Cataract Actually Is

The lens inside your eye is normally clear. A cataract is the natural clouding of that lens that comes with age. As it clouds, light has a harder time passing through — which is why vision gradually dims and blurs. It's extremely common, and it's not something you've done wrong.

Signs It May Be Time to Consider Surgery

• Cloudy, blurry, or “filmy” vision
• Glare and halos around lights, especially at night
• Colors looking faded or yellowed
• Needing more light to read, or frequent prescription changes

Surgery is usually considered once these changes start interfering with everyday life — driving, reading, or recognizing faces. There's rarely any rush; it's a quality-of-life decision you make together with your doctor.

The Procedure & Recovery

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that typically takes well under an hour. The cloudy lens is gently removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens implant. Most people go home the same day and notice clearer vision within a few days, following simple eye-drop and rest instructions.

A note for diabetic patients: if you have diabetes, we'll also assess your retina before surgery, since healthy diabetic eye management leads to the best outcomes. Learn more about our cataract care and senior eye care.

This is general information, not medical advice — whether surgery is right for you is a decision we'll make together after an exam.
