Early Warning Signs of Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss in working-age adults — and its most dangerous feature is how quietly it begins. Here's what to watch for, and why waiting for symptoms is risky.
The Hard Truth: Early On, There Are Often No Signs
In its earliest and most treatable stage, diabetic retinopathy frequently causes no noticeable symptoms. The damage to the retina's blood vessels happens silently. This is exactly why a yearly dilated eye exam matters so much — it can detect changes long before you'd ever feel them.
Symptoms That Can Appear as It Progresses
As the condition advances, you may begin to notice:
• New floaters — spots, specks, or cobweb-like shapes drifting across your vision
• Blurry or fluctuating vision that changes from day to day
• Dark or empty areas in your field of vision
• Trouble seeing colors, or poorer night vision
• Sudden vision loss — which is an emergency, so call us right away
If any of these appear, don't wait for your annual visit — contact us at (727) 738-5900.
