What to Expect at Your First Diabetic Eye Exam

If it's your first diabetic eye exam, a little nerves are normal — but there's nothing to worry about. The whole visit is painless and thorough. Here's exactly what happens and how to prepare.

Step by Step, What Happens

1. Your history. We'll review your diabetes, your medications, and any vision changes you've noticed.

2. Vision & pressure checks. Quick, painless tests of how well you see and the pressure inside your eyes.

3. Dilation. A few drops widen your pupils so we can see the retina clearly. They take about 15–20 minutes to work.

4. Retinal imaging. We may take detailed photos or a scan of the back of your eye to spot the earliest signs of diabetic retinopathy.

5. The exam & your plan. Dr. Powers examines your eyes and walks you through exactly what he sees and what comes next.

How to Prepare

• Bring a list of your medications and your insurance card
• Bring sunglasses — your eyes will be light-sensitive for a few hours after dilation
• Consider bringing a driver, since dilation can blur your near vision temporarily

That's really it. Most patients are surprised by how easy and unhurried the visit feels. It's the foundation of our diabetic eye care, and you can review accepted insurance before you come in.
